Italian Art Through the Centuries: an Introduction to Art History in Rome
This course is an introduction to Italian Art History from the foundation of Rome through the Baroque period. Rome’s layered artistic heritage is the perfect setting to examine the transformation of the Italian urban and artistic landscapes throughout the centuries.
During this course, students will understand Italian art in its social and cultural contexts. Students will learn to recognize the visual elements found in the various styles and periods of Italian art and architecture, and this course will provide the tools to strengthen their aesthetic comprehension and critical observation.
The History of Women Artists in Italy: Education, Opportunities, and Career
This course is the art history of women artists: from women’s early contributions to art found within the writings of ancient historian Pliny the Elder, to women sculptors, painters, and architects of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque periods and the 20th C. During this course, students will examine Bologna’s climate for fostering women artists more than any other city in Italy; women artists that were active in Rome and where to find their work; as well as Italian women artists of the 20th century. Students will gain knowledge of women artists from various historical periods and learn to identify the formal elements and styles of their work, as well as confidence in contributing to the dialogue of social and cultural contexts that have affected women artists representation within art history.

Wall Paintings – History of the Fresco
Wall Painting styles of Ancient Rome (focus on Rome and Pompeii), Mithrium wall decoration (one of Rome’s mystery cults), Catacomb funerary paintings, and Early Modern Frescos and Wall Paintings of the Renaissance and Baroque periods
Late Antique and Early Christian Iconography and Architecture
Rome’s transition from Pagan Empire to Capital of Christianity through it’s monuments, churches, and art
Conservation and Restoration – Techniques and Ideologies throughout the centuries
The Lives of Women of Ancient Rome through the Lens of Archeology and Art
Women’s opportunities, way of life, and their contribution to the arts in Ancient Rome; Vestal Virgins, priestesses of Isis, Livia and Helena, etc
The monuments and architecture of Hadrian: the Architect and Designer the courses will be held in english.
