Matteo Scarfò
Matteo Scarfò (Locri, 16/10/1986) è un regista e insegnante. È laureato in Lingua e Letteratura inglese.
Nel 2006 inizia a lavorare come assistente di produzione presso la Paco Cinematografica e nel 2008 pubblica il suo primo libro di racconti, intitolato Uomo mangia uomo, con la Mongolfiera Editrice.
Nel 2009 ricopre il ruolo di assistente per il film The last gamble, produzione americana girata tra New York e il New Jersey, con John Savage, Nick Mancuso, Ray Abruzzo, Sally Kirkland e Steven Bauer e con la regia di Joe Goodavage; per poi iniziare da regista il lungometraggio dal titolo Anna, Teresa e le Resistenti dedicato ad Anna Magnani e alle donne della Resistenza italiana. Questo progetto è selezionato anche in Canada dall’Italian Contemporary Film Festival per rappresentare i docufilm italiani nel 2012, insieme ai film di registi come Nanni Moretti e molti altri, e due anni dopo è inserito nel circuito delle biblioteche romane.
Il progetto successivo, Bomb! Fantasia in fiamme, è dedicato alla figura di Gregory Corso, uno dei più importanti poeti della Beat Generation insieme ad Allen Ginsberg e Jack Kerouac, il protagonista è interpretato da Nick Mancuso.
Successivamente collabora con il regista Giampaolo Abbiezzi per il soggetto del film Stalking Eva, un film di genere sullo stalking che esce nelle sale il 24 settembre 2015.
Nel 2016 Scarfò produce e dirige il film L’ultimo sole della notte, ispirato all’opera dello scrittore James Ballard. Il film è distribuito da Amazon Prime Video Italia e Chili.com
Il 24 novembre 2018 porta in scena a Roma La straniera. Zingara assorta in un sogno, primo studio teatrale dedicato alla scrittrice Anna Maria Ortese.
Contemporaneamente il regista inizia le riprese del cortometraggio di fantascienza Pale Blue Dot – A tale of two stargazers, prodotto da Francesco De Laurentiis e Joe Verni e ora presente su Prime Video e Apple TV.
Nel 2021 è uscito per la mongolfiera editrice il monologo teatrale Anita al buio, scritto in collaborazione con Priscilla Muscat, sulle vicende di una ragazza alle prese con la sua identità che cambia in una Roma isolata e pandemica. Nel 2023 si unisce al collettivo Solarpunk Italia ed esce con Delos Digital Quello che costruiamo non va mai via, una raccolta di testi che raccontano l’immaginario di alcune città future nella narrativa di fantascienza, in alcune visioni futuribili dell’architettura, nella pedagogia.
Nel 2016, senza abbandonare la carriera artistica, diventa un insegnante di italiano per stranieri lavorando con la Leonardo Da Vinci, nel 2022 inizia la sua collaborazione con la Società Dante Alighieri, Italia Idea e Centro Linguistico Dante Alighieri. Nel 2023 inizia a insegnare storia e cultura italiana del dopoguerra alla Lewis University nella sede di Roma e frequenta il corso di Certificazione in Neurolanguage Coaching® per diventare un Language Coach ideato da Rachel Marie Paling e ELC (Efficient Language Coaching Ltd.)
I am an Italian language teacher certified by the University of Siena (DITALS). I received a master’s degree in Literature and English Language from the University of Rome La Sapienza; and upon graduation, I pursued work within the film industry gaining experience as a director, writer, and producer. After completing a film job in the United States, I returned to Rome and began my career as an Italian language teacher for foreigners.
For five years, I taught Italian in Rome at Scuola Leonardo da Vinci – a premiere Italian language school officially authorized by the Italian Ministry of Education. In collaboration with GustoLab Institute in Rome, I organized study trips for students of the American universities Hobart and William Smith Colleges and Cornell University. In addition to my skills as an Italian language teacher to foreigners, I prepared students at Scuola Leonardo Da Vinci to pass the exam for certification of Italian language CILS as well as taught Art History courses at GustoLab Institute in 2021.
Currently, I am teaching with two Italian language schools in Rome: Società Dante Alighieri and Centro Linguistico Dante Alighieri. I am also teaching Modern Italian History and Society Through Cinema and Literature at Lewis University.
Alongside my passion for teaching, I continue to develop my film career as a screenwriter and director. My list of credits include writing and directing a feature film, two documentaries, as well as numerous short films and music videos.
When I am not creating or teaching, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Jessica – soaking up the culture, beauty, and history of Rome together, and playing with our dog, Keats.
Jessica Simmons
Jessica Simmons è di San Francisco, dove ha conseguito una laurea in Associate of Arts in Interior Design. Dopo la laurea, si è trasferita a Los Angeles per studiare scenografia per film, televisione e teatro e ha conseguito un Bachelor of Science in Set & Exhibit Design mentre studiava anche Teoria dell’Arte e Belle Arti come parte del programma, laureandosi con lode. Durante questo periodo, ha avuto l’opportunità di lavorare come pittrice scenica in “In the Wind” di Martin Papazian (che ha vinto il premio come miglior film ai festival cinematografici di New Orleans e Vail), nonché come scenografa in diversi “AFI Conservatory – American Film Festival” per i cortometraggi degli studenti del Film Institute. Dopo aver completato la laurea, ha iniziato a lavorare presso una società di scenografie, fabbricando oggetti di scena personalizzati e dettagli del set, collaborando con lo scenografo sulla direzione artistica e il design di vari progetti, acquisto e noleggio di oggetti di scena e allestimenti per pubblicità commerciali e progetti cinematografici. Tuttavia, la sua passione risiedeva più nelle belle arti.
Da sempre una persona creativa che amava lavorare con le mani, Jessica ha cambiato la direzione della sua carriera e ha iniziato a lavorare come artista espositrice per “Anthropologie”, progettando e realizzando installazioni artistiche per vetrine e display interni e creando prototipi in collaborazione con il Dipartimento per le installazioni; insieme avrebbero poi fornito una direzione creativa per l’azienda per le esposizioni stagionali. Dopo 5 anni presso “Anthropologie”, Jessica è tornata a San Francisco per lavorare per “Daniel Goldstein Studio” come artista di installazioni, realizzando installazioni scultoree su larga scala secondo la visione e i progetti dell’artista.
Quando lo Studio si trasferì da San Francisco, Jessica ha lavorato per un periodo con “Terrain” come artigiana del design, progettando e fabbricando installazioni di piante e fiori e pareti di muschio personalizzate prima di trasferirsi definitivamente a Roma, in Italia, per conseguire un master in Storia dell’arte presso l’Università degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata. Durante i suoi studi, Jessica si è appassionata alla scoperta e alla ricerca dei ruoli spesso sottorappresentati delle artiste nella storia dell’arte in vari periodi. A Roma, ha lavorato come insegnante di storia dell’arte per studenti dall’estero, portando i suoi alunni fuori dalle aule per insegnare di fronte ai siti architettonici, archeologici e artistici che stavano studiando, trasformando i siti, i musei e le chiese di Roma nelle aule dei suoi studenti.
Jessica vive a Roma con suo marito Matteo Scarfò, un collega creativo, scrittore, regista, insegnante e un essere umano incredibile a tutto tondo. La loro piccola famiglia include il loro cane adottato, Keats (un mix di razza spinone), che prende il nome da uno dei poeti preferiti di suo marito e da uno dei loro primi appuntamenti alla Keats Shelley House situata vicino a Piazza di Spagna.
Jessica Simmons is from San Francisco where she earned an Associate of Arts degree in Interior Design. After graduation, she moved to Los Angeles to study set design for film, television, and theater and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Set & Exhibit Design while also studying art theory and fine art as part of the honors program. During this time, she had the opportunity to work as a scenic painter on Martin Papazian’s “In the Wind” (which won Best Picture at both the New Orleans and Vail film festivals) as well as a Production Designer on several of AFI Conservatory – American Film Institute’s student short films. After completing her degree, she began working at a production design house, fabricating custom props and set details, collaborating with the production designer on various projects’ art direction and design, prop shopping and rentals, and set dressing for commercial advertisement and film projects. However, her passion lay more in fine art.
Always a creative individual who loved working with her hands, Jessica shifted career directions and began as a display artist for “Anthropologie”, designing and fabricating art installations for window and interior displays and prototyping in collaboration with home office for installations that would provide creative direction for company wide seasonal displays. After 5 years at “Anthropologie”, Jessica came back to San Francisco to work for “Daniel Goldstein Studio” as an installation artist, fabricating large scale sculptural installations according to the artist’s vision and designs.
When the Studio moved out of San Francisco, Jessica worked for a time with “Terrain” as a design artisan, designing and fabricating plant and floral installations and custom moss walls before ultimately moving to Rome, Italy in order to pursue a masters degree in Art History at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. During her studies, Jessica became passionate about discovering and researching women artist’s often underrepresented roles in art history throughout various periods. In Rome, she has worked as an art history teacher to study abroad students, taking her students outside of the classroom to teach in front of the very architectural, archeological sites and art they are learning about, transforming the sites, museums, and churches of Rome into her students’ classrooms.
Jessica is based out of Rome with her husband Matteo Scarfò, a fellow creative individual, writer, director, teacher, and all-around incredible human being. Their small family includes their adopted Spinone mix, Keats, who was named after one of her husband’s favorite poets and one of their early dates to the Keats Shelley House located next to the Spanish Steps.
