The Art and Monuments of Ancient Rome: From the foundation of Rome until the reign of Constantine

This course is a deeper study of Rome’s archeological sites and ancient monuments. Rome’s layered artistic heritage is the perfect setting to examine the transformation of the Italian urban and artistic landscapes implemented during the building campaigns of centuries of the ever fluctuating emperors.

During this course, students will learn to make sense of the numerous ruins throughout Rome’s Centro Storico (Rome’s historic city center) as well as recognize various architectural and decorative styles that were popular during the various periods of the Roman Empire. This course will provide the tools to strengthen students’ historical aesthetic comprehension allowing them to translate the ruins and monuments they see into a historical, social, political, and religious context. As with the rest of the courses, this course can be done either online or in person. If online, photos and videos will be provided showing both the ruins and monuments as they appear today along with 3D reconstructions done by digital artists in collaboration with archeologists based on an array of archeological evidence.
